Dry skin cracks appearing on your skin is fairly common in environments where the temperature goes very low and the humidity is also down. Sometimes called winter itch, it happens to anyone, regardless of age and will even show up in people who never have any other skin problems.
So what does it look like, and how do you know that is what you have? There are normally fine lines on the face and skin, but they become more visible when your skin becomes too dry. It may also get flaky and feel rough to the touch. When it is really bad, cracks may appear that resemble fish nets…criss-crossing each other and looking a bit like cracked porcelain does when it is hair fractures.
Don’t let dry skin go unattended, because if you do, you will pay for it when your dry skin cracks. This is especially true on your hands and feet. If you keep scratching them inflammation can occur along with scaly patches. If it gets pussy pustules, a bacterial infection is now developing. At this point antibiotics would be necessary. See your dermatologist.

But it isn’t only the weather and humidity that can cause this skin problem. People who have hormone imbalances, thyroid problems, or other skin disorders may also suffer from dry skin. It occurs when the outer layer of your skin doesn’t contain enough water for it to function normally. Therefore, keeping your hands in soapy water, harsh chemicals, and even just growing older can rob your skin of the oils it needs to protect itself. As the skin dries out it contracts, and that is when the dry skin cracks occur.
